DLSA Members, Dylan Cox, his
Family, Geno Arriola and Jeanette Francis (not pictured due to being
photographer) take on Los Cabos. After a multitude of flight delays for
the Cox Family leaving out of San Diego, touch down arrival in San Jose
del Cabo was made late August 20th. A multitude of surf sessions
occured and a journey out to the East Cape to surf Nine Palms was one of
the highlights of the trip.

A poem written by Katie Calkins about the recent Santa Cruz Coalition Contest
-Mighty Are We-
A small team of of seven drove up the coast... humble of size, not much to boast. Each bringing hope, a stick, and some pride... a black little dog and dreams of good rides. A vision of beauty, this place called The Lane... overhead surf while the wind blew insane. All fear put aside and replaced by courage... our small Doho team could not be discouraged. A broken fin on the cliff, lead to sharing a board... our girl swam out to claim her reward. No thought of sharks, cold kelp, or risk... she patiently waited in water of brisk. A leash was a choice of course we all had... but for some the leash only makes them mad. To lose a board in the final you see... can waste precious time, and a swim in the sea. All trophies awarded, fifth place we achieved... our team may be tiny, but mighty are we!!!

Be a good example by remembering to always try and follow the basic surfing "Rules Of The Road"
Whether you are surfing at Doheny or another break, remember that you are a representative of the D.L.S.A. So set a good example on how to be a courteous and safe surfer. Be a mentor and show everybody your aloha spirit as well as how to respect other surfers and the ocean. And remember to always pass off a few waves to
the groms and less experienced surfers. It will stoke them out as well as teach them to do the same to others. ______________________________

A Member submitted short story about the Velzy
Story and Photo Submitted by Doug "Rubio" Smith "A Day To Honor Dale Velzy"
By Rubio
It's a clear star filled
night . My van is loaded up and ready for the surf day ahead. Pull the
choke on the front of the doghouse. Turn the key and she roars to life.
The drive out of the hills of San Juan is a fast one. I pull up to the
city lot and park. The tide is low and the dawn is approaching. The
hills over Doheny turn orange with the star filled night still overhead,
a breathtaking sight. The volunteers that drive our events are showing
up too. The people take their places and the event starts. The day flies
by in a blur of things that need to be done. Heats are judged, scores
tallied , and pictures taken. The jetty kids take control of the sounds
of the event, announcing the competitors , the
sponsors, and adding a flavor only they can provide. We are blessed with
small contestable surf and a windless sunny day. Somewhere behind us
another army of volunteers is preparing a luau celebration to honor the
man of the day, Dale Velzy. A surf pioneer whose designs shape our
sport to this day . I see his pig design returning to the feet of the
next generation of surfers of this age more and more. He has always been
one of the giants of our sport. Today we honor that legacy. The heats
move by smoothly and quickly . The paddle race is run throughout the day
. As always it happens in our sport youth and the seasoned veterans mix
together. The young not always ending up on top. But all who take part
feel the pain of an intense workout. The finals arrive and it's a battle
to see who will claim boneyard bragging rights for the next year. And
no one gives in easily. My heat is one of the hardest of my competitive
life. All heats have surf, be it small . But remember we are blessed
with one of the best small waves on the coast. My face feels hot , the
sun has taken it's toll. The contest ends . The city we have built is
quickly removed with the help of many volunteers . The time has finally
come to change clothes and enjoy the party. But as always there is more
work to do. The trophy platform is set but the sound system is not. So
we pitch in set it up. The party begins with the food . An excellent
barbecue . Prepared and served by more commited volunteers . After a day
of no food it tastes incredible. Once the trophies are given out , the
boards are given away and the people start to file out. All leave with
the band playing a surf tune from past filling their ears. The people
who stay are treated to a surfin' dance party. It's a warm night. The
Hawaiian Revue is fire dancing in the distance . The show goes on... I
feel tired and happy our event was a success. Thanks to all who worked to make it happen. It was truly a day to remember ..

Take National Surfing Titles!
Article and Photos Submitted by Jim Coshland
Matt Jensen (blue)
At the ASP sanctioned SIMA Surfing America National Championship Finals held at
the Huntington Beach Pier on August 25th and 26th, D.L.S.A. Competition Team members
took home 6 of the 28 awards given out in 7 divisions.
Glen Tilly (blue)
The contest featured the top surfers from all over the United States and included
regional champions from the Western Surfing Association, the National Scholastic
Surfing Association, WSA Prime, Eastern Surfing Association, Gulf Surfing Association and Hawaiian Surfing Association.
Josh Reposo (white), Gabe fembres (yellow)
The 2 days were filled with a very high level of surfing from all the competitors, with incredible performances in large surf. There were consistant big sets along with waist to shoulder high waves, with at least one big clean up set coming through in each heat. Many heats with lots of big dumping surf which made it very exciting to watch the competitors make the most of their heats in the challenging surf.
In that light there were a lot of big hits and gravity defying drop in's that kept all the
spectators very entertained and appreciative of the various performances given in every heat. And after the dust settled, the D.L.S.A. Members competing took home the following National Rankings: Masters Mens Shortboard - Glen Tilly 3rd Place.
Mens Shortboard - Matt Jenson 4th Place. Open Mens Longboard - Josh Reposo 2nd Place and Gabe Fembres 3rd Place. Jr Women Longboard - Michelle Bautista Layton 2nd Place and, Rachael Tilly 4th Place. Congrats to all of these members on your national rankings! Way to represent the D.L.S.A!

D.L.S.A, Members help save a fellow
surfer's life in Seal Beach
On Sunday January 18th Bobby Knox and Chuck McElvain were instrumental in saving the life of a fellow surfer at the river jetties in Seal Beach. While surfing and having fun with a group of other D.L.S.A. Members they witnessed another surfer experiencing a seizure right after riding a wave. Before they could reach the person in distress, the gentleman ended up face down and drowning. When he was turned over the man was lifeless and not breathing. Thinking quickly and enlisting the help of other nearby surfers, they ended up being able to float the man on some boards while a lady climbed on top and started chest compressions while bringing him to shore. And due to the fast emergency treatment they were able to clear the man's lungs of a lot of water and restart his breathing. Soon after the man was brought to the beach by the group of lifesavers, lifeguards and paramedics soon arrived. The lifeguard stated that without the fast action by our fellow club members and other good Samaritans the man would not be alive at this time. To see both print and a tv news report about this event go to: http://www.ocregister.com/articles/beach-surf-surfers-2284803-lifeguards-water and http://www.cbs2.com/video/?id=90193@kcbs.dayport.com
Also please check the website in the future for a club CPR Class date. The club sponsored one a couple of years ago and it is time to do it again. It is something that we all should know in case the need to help someone arises.
