President's Message

Hello DLSA,

Hope all our members are doing well. I am very excited to have a fantastic group of people leading DLSA into 2011. As of the May meeting we have done some wonderful things for our community. First off we have finally given back as a support group to several organizations and individuals. The Doheny State Park received $1,000 from use and the Heritage Foundation also received $1,000. This is do to the work we have done with our contest and celebrations of the surfing life. The money we have raised has given us an opportunity to give back and you all should feel good that DLSA can support these groups. We also donated four Velzy Luau tickets and a membership to prayforgrantboswith.com. This is a young Orange County man that has had a life changing mishap while seeking medical attention this year. Grant’s friends and family had a fundraiser to help support this young man in his battle to have quality of life. Alex & Rachael Calkins also donated artwork to help Grant and his family in this fundraiser. They were able to raise over $22,000 to help with the cost of Grants care.

DLSA had a small team of surfers take the trek to Santa Cruz for the Memorial Day Contest. I would like to thank the team for their efforts and 5th
place finish. We had great surf and a mix of weather that made the event one of the best in years. Also Mother Nature delivered on the way home with some head high beach barrels in Carmel and point break lefts in Big Sur at Willow Creek. If you ever get the chance check out Willow Creek it is a great surf spot with no crowds, only you and the thought of the man in the grey suit.

On June 11th
we had our Surfing 60’s and it was a blast from the past. We had fun Doheny surf at the buried hammer and saw some great rides by the local youth and more mature riders. Dave Rosenberg had the group feed during the awards with his amazing DLSA dogs. I was so glad to see all of you dressed in your 60’s best and cool vintage boards. Some of the highlights were Shirlene Bobroff making it into the finals and great trophies donated to us by the Harris family from Oceanside Longboard Surfing Club. To all the finalist and those cheering us on cowabuga man!

On June 24th
we have our Menehune and Junior Championship pre sign up and registration at Hobie Dana Point 6:30 PM. The contest is June 25th and we need all DLSA members to step up and help. Please contact the Board & Officers to donate your valued energy. We are also looking for raffle prizes and need help in that area. That is how we give back to Ronald McDonald House. We have a board meeting on Thursday nights, till the event come on down, and give your input on how to make DLSA even better.

July 16th
is the Wounded Warrior’s day at the beach with DLSA. This is yet another way we give to the community and is such an awarding experience. All DLSA and non-DLSA members are welcome to take these fine American’s out into the Big Blue to enjoy a ride on the waves at Church.

Remember the next two general meetings will be at 11 am with a potluck and some great surfing at Doheny State Beach. See you all at the beach or on a wave. Check the Web Site for all event dates.

See you in the water,
Mark

   D.L.S.A. Donation Update

I thought that we should keep everyone informed about how Doheny Longboard Surfing Association has been very active in giving donations. In the month of June we gave  out 2 separate $1,000.00 donations to very worthy causes.

The first one went to Doheny State Parks office to help keep “Vickie Wiker” on the payroll. Vickie is the environmental footprint of the Doheny State Park & Beach. She is the person that the personnel at the park looks to for environmental concerns. It was my pleasure to be able to present this check to her on behalf of D.L.S.A.. The second donation went to the Ronald McDonald House of Orange County, from the proceeds of the Menehune & Junior Longboard Championships. This donation became more meaningful, especially when I went to present the check to them. I got to witness the “House” in full action, and it was a very inspirational and never forgetting experience. What they do there gives people hope and keeps loved ones close at a time of need.

D.L.S.A. will be presenting more donations at our next General Meeting on July 30th, 2011 at 11:00am located at site number #10. *note: this is a late meeting followed by a family “pot luck” style lunch and surf day. We will be presenting our annual D.L.S.A. Scholarship Award donations to some of our club youths, to help them further their continued education.

I just want to say that donations like these above make me really proud to be associated with an organization like the Doheny Longboard Surfing Association.

Thanks to the members who helped at the Doheny Halloween Haunt

I just want to start out with giving everyone who showed up to help a really huge “THANK YOU”!!!!!!!!! About 20 Doheny Longboard Surfing Association members showed up and worked very hard in assisting on the break-down of the Halloween Haunt. Everyone stayed and worked till after midnight completing a full tear-down.

This task was really appreciated by all of the Doheny State Beach staff, and goes along way with our relationship with the Doheny State Park personnel. It is extremely important for DLSA members to help the Doheny State Beach staff in anyway possible to keep our relationship good.

Due to all of the State budget cuts of the State Parks System, our help goes along way in keeping our park pristine and fun to enjoy by all. So I just want to say again, Great job D.L.S.A. members!!!!!!!!

The D.L.S.A. announces it's last Wounded Warrior Surf Day of 2011

The date is coming up soon and the club is looking for more volunteers.  Please email Tom Dolton HERE to sign up ASAP!
Here's the information from him...

All,
We’ve been asked to put on one last surf day for the Wounded Warrior Project for this year. With the help of Hobie and Sano Beach Club at Pendleton we have set Oct 29 as the date.

I would like to ask all of those that would like to help out to please let me know as soon as you can. Any friends that you know that would like to volunteer please have them send their contact info also.

Again as in the past we will be kicking off about 8 AM at Church. We have the same location again and we will be doing a BBQ with the help of master chief Dave. I have a number of wetsuits but find myself short of women’s suits. So if you have one we can use for the day please let me know. The water temps are falling and I hope we can stay in the mid 60’s. Things to bring if you want to work the water would be a good full suit and booties and or water shoes as the rocks take their toll on the feet.

So let me know as soon as possible and I’ll get an access list put together for the Basilone gate entrance and I will be sending out directions for coming through the base.

Thanks again,
Tom Dolton

Again, please contact Tom ASAP at the link above to sign up.  Thank you!

The 2011 D.L.S.A. Dale Velzy Classic
Surf Contest and Luau was a fun for all!

Article by Bobby Knox, Photos Steve Ryan

22nd Annual Dale Velzy Surf Classic & Luau

The Doheny Longboard Surfing Association was very proud to honor the Velzy family at this year’s Dale Velzy Classic and Luau at Doheny State Park on September 17th, 2011. The event boasted everything from classic Longboard surfing, traditional paddle racing, stand-up paddle racing (SUP), and even a World Class Tandem surf contest. Surfers ranging in ages from 9 to the late 70’s gave their all for this annual event. The early morning surf contest started out with a south wind and drizzle. As the hardy competitors arrived a few left the beach, but those who were ready to compete stayed and surfed the less than grand conditions the morning threw at us. At 8am the wind stopped and by 10am we were in sun and a wonderful day of surfing was had by all. The Hawk “Dale Velzy” must have smiled down on the contest and we were blessed with small perfect Doheny Boneyard surf.

A great crowd of supporters lined the beach as each round of competitors began their respective heats. Some of the most incredible surfing of the day came from the young men’s and women’s divisions, as well as Tandem finals and Mickey Munoz ripping in the SUP finals. They showed great style and grace in the 1 to 3 foot surf, really lighting up the crowd of onlookers. What a great way to end the summer, surfing in a “family friendly” competition.

At 3pm the gate opened up for the Dale Velzy Classic Luau. Fran, Matt and Meleea Velzy were in attendance and expressed their appreciation for this event, held each year in Dale Velzy’s honor. The competitors mingled with all of the guests, as the DLSA cooks prepared a fantastic Hawaiian meal. At the end of dinner we were all treated to the Polynesian Dance Review, showing some awesome fire dancing to all of the spectators crowded around the show. Some very lucky individuals won Coral Reef wetsuits and the grand prize, a beautiful classic Dale Velzy surfboard. The evening was capped by “The Eliminators” surf band rocking us as we all danced under the stars till the close of the Doheny State Park.

Proceeds from the event are used to support the Doheny Longboard Surfing Association and it’s many charities, including the Doheny State Beach Interpretive Association, The Ronald McDonald House, The Surfing Heritage Foundation, as well as the DLSA Scholarship Fund.

Recap and results from the
Malibu Contest
Submitted by Mark Calkins

Malibu “Call to the Wall”  2011

The point break wave, one of California’s sparkling jewels…Malibu.  A place where surfing's history comes alive with one look at the rustic old wall, the soft sand, and the spanning blue Pacific Ocean.  God must have thought of all the future surfers when he created Malibu.  A place laid out in such perfect design.  Where surfers have appreciated and enjoyed continuously, since surfing came to our coast.  Visions of greats come to mind; Pete Peterson, Miki Dora, Lance Carson, Tubesteak, Mickey Munoz, Kemp Alberg, Dewey Weber, Mike Doyle, Johnny Frain, and Dale Velzy, just to name a few.  Now, this last weekend, it’s our turn to ride the perfect peelers of Malibu.  Trying for a prize and the esteem that comes with being one of the six in the “Call to the Wall” finals.

Of course the waves were good, a fun size, and nicely shaped.  The weather was extremely beautiful, a lovely summer weekend at the ‘Bu. The wind was light in the morning and increased some in the afternoon.  The small surf kept sweeping across the point, one after another, heat after heat.  The whole coalition had to wait fort heir turn to ride, and sometimes it seemed unbearable because the waves and the water looked so darn good.

Our DLSA team hung out under our pop-up, set up at the end of the long line of club tents.  We had a great view of the point and full spectrum of the wave to the desired kick-out spot.  A nice place to relax, root on our favorites, and film our team.  Club moms generously supplied sunscreen, snacks, fruit, and drinks to the entire team.  Just like our past historic surfing heroes, we were living it large at Malibu!

Here’s how the competition played out…

Photos submitted by Nancy Rohr,  & Mark Calkins

From Nancy Rohr:  Hi, Here are some photos from Santa Cruz.  It ended up pretty well for DLSA. We took 5th overall, but we only had 7 total surfers entered! The 4 Calkins, 2 Rohrs, and Noah Cardoza. Finals ended up:  Perry 3rd in Menehune, Perry broke his fin on the rocks at Cowells and that was a big deal for the next day; Hallie got 5th in Open Women's, even though we thought that was her best heat; Mark took 1st in his division and Katie, Hallie, Perry, and Alex took 2nds in the other divisions, so that was a pretty impressive result with such a small team. The surf was really fantastic. At least 4-6 feet all the time with a few big ones over 7 feet.

The D.L.S.A. is one of just a few surf clubs that has been invited to the Rincon invitational since it started.  This fun event is not judged by surfing talent, but on how much fun and stoke you can show out in the water.  Party waves are encouraged and courtesy to the free surfers who may encroach into the event boundaries is mandatory or you can be disqualified.  Basically to be scored the highest is to have fun and surf as many waves as possible in a one hour period.

We were able to get a really good team of current and prospective members to go up there and participate again this year.  All of us were concerned the week before the event that the weather and conditions may not be so great that day.  But Saturday morning, eleven D.L.S.A. surfers happily showed up for our 11am heat to sunshine and consistent good surf.  The swell from the earlier storms had some sets with waves about head high and peeling from the point into the cove by the time our heat started, with no wind!  For one full hour our team of eleven friends had a great time catching wave after wave at this iconic surf location  So needless to say, it was a very fun time for everybody who made the long drive that day!  And I suggest that if we continue to be invited each year and you have an opportunity to do it, don't think twice.  Just go!

I would like to thank everybody who signed up for the Rincon Team;

Mason Shaw, Geno Arriola, Jeanette Francis,   Justin Scheller, Carson Scheller (Justin's Brother), Garrett Spak (prospective), Jiro Akeda (prospective), Bob Ramierez, Jon Arvidson, Chris Thompson, Tom Hammer, Gabe Fembres, Julie Fembres, Chad Biggs and Kailey Biggs

Thank you guys for representing the club with your awesome surfing skills and a true aloha spirit.  Congratulations and way to go!

Jim Coshland

Surf Legends Sculpture Forges Ahead

Since 2008 the project has been fund raising and working toward making this sculpture a reality. With the recent contribution from the very generous Joe Melchione, the artist, Phil Roberts has been awarded the contract to start building the sculpture designed in the sketches and moquette shown below.

Phil is currently working on a 12 foot memorial sculpture of surfing legend Dewey Weber inspired by the photography by Leroy Grannis for the city of Hermosa Beach.  Limited edition of smaller bronze castings of the statue will be available to purchase. Proceeds go towards the outdoor sculpture. Phil's original oil painting of LeRoy photographing Dewey at 22nd street is available.  Limited edition gilcee prints on canvas also available per request.  Please check out the progress of this progress at http://surflegendsmemorial.wordpress.com/.

The D.L.S.A. 2011 D.L.S.A. Annual Cardiac Contest and BBQ recap and results
Article submitted by Katie Calkins

On Saturday morning, March 19th,  a few hearty souls braved the rainy elements at trail 1 to compete in DLSA’s annual Cardiac Classic. We all arrived near the 8am hour, rain pouring down. I stayed snug in my van, texting individuals who were inquiring about the contest status, on or off? In the meantime, scouts were sent down in the rain to look at the conditions. Clouds began breaking up, blue skies emerged, and the scouts returned with valuable information. The surf was GOOD! Time to get our equipment to the beach and hit the water!
Trail 1 is steep, but short. The mud wasn’t bad at all, the sun was already at work drying the path to the surf. We carried very minimal contest supplies, a whistle, a hand held timer, judge & tally sheets, and a couple of chairs. We wore our wetsuits down and shared some towels. We didn’t use rashguards because the tide was high and the visibility was wonderful. We put the heats together on the beach and sent the first heat out.
The waves were pumping in at a constant rate. It was peaky, about 2 to 4 ft, with some bottomed out troughs at take off. Because of the high tide, the inside rocks were gnarly.  Unfortunately, some of us have scraped upped ankles and shins to show for it. The waves stayed consistently fun the entire morning, and the sun continued to shine brightly. We were all pleased that the rain had not stopped us from our favorite pastime, surfing and competing with one another. There was only one strong and willing participant to immerse himself in the frigid ocean without a wet suit. Everyone else remained fully suited, and somewhat warm.
After the steep trek back up to the parking area, we packed up our equipment, rinsed off, and headed up to San Mateo campground.  Everyone was very hungry by then, looking forward to some delicious food, and time to talk and just hang out. We waited to hand out trophies until we had some food and drink. We also waited for some other members to come down and join us in our campground festivities. After about an hour or so, the competitors were anxious to receive their placing. Cardiac T-shirts were handed out to the finalists along with homemade medals of honor. The Frozen Flesh Award was hand painted by Rachael Calkins and is truly a cool keepsake.
We took pleasure in the rest of the day, talking, laughing, relaxing, eating, and drinking with each other until late afternoon. The campground was so beautiful that no one was in a hurry to leave, happy just to stay to enjoy each other’s company, and take in the lovely scenery. I wish more member’s were able be with all of us at the 2011 Cardiac Classic, to have had the wonderful experience that we all enjoyed. It was a good day to be a surfer! A big THANK YOU goes out to everyone who made this year’s Cardiac possible!
Keep a warm heart, Katie Calkins

Recent San Clemente Times article written by our Denny Michael

"Docents Do"
  by Denny Michael

Henry Ford innovator of the drop knee cutback in his famous photo by Leroy Grannis

The word docent is an interesting one. It’s an old word that is not used as often as it once was. Here are a few descriptions from a couple of sources:

From Wikipedia:

Docent is a title at some European universities to denote a specific academic appointment within a set structure of academic ranks. Docent is also at some universities generically used for a person who has the right to teach.

From Merriam-Webster:

1 : a college or university teacher or lecturer 2 : a person who leads guided tours especially through a museum or art gallery

From the above references the Surfing Heritage Foundation likes to think that their docents who volunteer time have stretched the old meaning a bit. This is because these docents are not merely lecturers or guided tour specialists—no, these people have a little bit of salt water running in their veins.

The Surfing Heritage Docents have many points of reference connecting them to surfing but the strongest link is that they are all practicing waterman and women. Surfing, its history and practice surround them. Frankly, many of the docents are more at home in the water than on land. They all have a deep understanding of the history of surf and therefore can teach it well.

Some in fact are woven into the fabric of surf history itself with their own special stories. Take for example Allan Seymour; Seymour grew up in our local area where he still lives today. He began surfing in the mid-1950s and made a career in the lifestyle sport as a sales representative and contest promoter. As one of the first cultural observers to realize that a market was developing for surfing collectables, he launched Pacific Coast Vintage Surf Auction, providing an annual forum for buyers and sellers to trade boards, artwork and more from surfing’s past. Today he runs a surfing collectable website; Classicsurf.com and is deeply involved in the surf industry.

Another docent is Henry Ford from San Clemente. In Bruce Brown’s earlier surf films, Ford is featured in various sections of San Clemente from out front of Dale Velzy’s surf shop on Coast Highway to being at Poche Beach before there was a Shorecliffs development. Ford has done everything in surfing. He is a Hemosa Beach Surfers Hall of Fame winner, was a lifeguard, is a successful surf event promoter and currently directs the World Longboard Championships. In the Matt Warshaw book, The Encyclopedia of Surfing, the description of the classic surf move, the drop knee turn, is captured perfectly via a picture taken from the lens of legendary surf photographer Leroy Grannis featuring Ford performing the maneuver—an iconic shot of classic surfing at its best.

Corky Carroll (another local area surf legend) said it well in a recent article he wrote about Henry; “the legendary Californian is a mainstay in many aspects of our surfing culture. The surfer, Henry Ford, is a classic dude.”

Allan and Henry are just a few of many Surfing Heritage docents that lend a bit of their own background and history to the Foundation. It’s this special collection of dedicated people that give their time and effort to help preserve surfing’s history that makes the Surfing Heritage docents special indeed.

Ask for a docent led tour the next time you visit the Surfing Heritage Foundation—you may be surprised what you’ll learn. Please call in advance to make an appointment.

The Surfing Heritage Foundation is located at 110 Calle Iglesia in San Clemente. They can be reached by phone at 949.388.0313 ext. 0 or on the web at www.surfingheritage.org. Business hours are Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and visiting hours are Monday through Saturday 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Groups can be accommodated at other times by appointment.

The D.L.S.A. does well in tough conditions at the Windansea Surfing Club Event

The Windansea Surf Club Invitational 2010
"It's all about the love"

On the weekend of November 27th & 28th a few of us die hard DLSA surf competitors drove south to the beautiful La Jolla Shores. We were expecting a cold weekend of small surf and club comradery.
Saturday we did encounter small surf, but the day was nicer than we expected. The surf was very small, wind waves with little to no wind. Most of us were prepared with big single finned boards. A good call and most everyone made it through the first rounds. Stuffed goodie bags were given out with a cool T-shirt, a nice addition to the day. We had a one man paddle team, "Chad the Man Biggs", who single handedly placed 5th for DLSA. That evening a dinner was served at a local brewery with a variety of appetizers, main dishes, and desserts.
During the night the wind blew and increased with the rising sun. The surfers pulled up to the beach one by one Sunday morning. Nobody wanted to get out of their vehicle. The sea was angry that day!!! Four to six foot victory at sea and 18 mile an hour wind gusts was our fate on Sunday. Cold!!! Miserable!!! But...to our small team...Conquerable!!!
Thank you to our devoted DLSA Team, family, & friends for keeping the stoke!

Your Team Captian,
Katie

Paddle Out For Bill Steinriede
Article submitted by Denny Michael

Bill Steinriede Paddle out; 10/16/10

First, the paddle out was a wonderful program for a wonderful person.  On Saturday, 10/16/2010 a large group of Bill Steinriede’s friends and family paddled out into a nice glassy south swell outside of Doheny’s River Mouth surf area.  We paid tribute to Bill in a traditional ring of surfers hearing great words by his son-in-law, Ryan Engle.  Ryan stated that Bill was a champion of people and that we will all remember him whenever we paddle out to this location. Before and after the program there were many great stories shared about the wonderful nature of “Everything” Bill.  From the parking lot, to the Palapa and into the surf, we celebrated a great person who will be remembered for all that he accomplished.  It was a nice tribute to Bill, he will be missed from the line-up.

The D.L.S.A. Competition Team does well at the Pacific Beach Coalition Contest
Article submitted by Katie Calkins

The First Annual Tourmaline Club Challenge 2010

Last weekend, Oct. 16th & 17th, a small team of 15 dedicated DLSA surfers headed south to the beautiful beach called Tourmaline. The weather was moist, not stormy, and the wind was calm most of the time. Although the sky looked threatening, it never rained and it wasn’t too cold. Especially because of the warm reception our team received from our friends in the Coalition.
The contest started bright & early on Saturday morning, 6:45 am! There were fun size waves of 2 to 4 foot, a smooth beach break that walled up on the inside. There was some confusion on what board to ride for some of us, high-pro or log? Either would work, but what would the judges score higher? We all decided to ride the board that each one felt most comfortable on and surf our best. Oh yeah, and hoped for the best …scores that is!
Our team helped out with the judging throughout the weekend. It was fun sitting at the judging tent elbow to elbow with other judges from the Coalition. It seemed, as though we were all really happy to spend the weekend at the place we all love most, the beach! Thanks to all of you who helped judge!
On Saturday evening a dinner was served at the VFW Post. Taco Surf presented a fantastic meal of giant tacos, your choice of pork, beef, or chicken, with cheese enchiladas, and beans with rice. Endless chips, guacamole, sour cream, and salsa were offered all night. The Coalition kids were occupying the pool table while everyone else was gulping down their delicious meal and enjoying their choice of beverage. Nobody left there hungry and all slept well that night with a full belly…ha ha!
Sunday morning came quick and we returned with a winning attitude. The waves had a little better shape and were smooth, ready to ride. Our tandem teams were excited, and so was I because we had 3 teams! They surfed all beautifully and made our DLSA team proud. I was happy to have Gary & Johanna Siskar step in to pay full price and surf for our team. Thank you Siskar’s!
The weekend ended with trophies handed out right there at the Tourmaline parking lot. The sun was going down fast and the sky was a bright orange backdrop for the division finalist. Each winner was presented a colorful tribal tiki mask with a grinning smile. That’s what all of us were wearing by then, a great big grinning smile! Thank you to all of you DLSA members who shared in the stoke! Remember that Windansea’s Coalition is November 27th & 28th at La Jolla Cove. I hope to see you there!

"30 Minutes With Teahupoo"
A incredible first hand account of a experience at one of the gnarliest and most dangerous breaks in the World
Copy of email submitted by Tom Dalton
Story by Ian Foulke
Photo: Unknown, submitted by Ian Foulke

D.L.S.A. Webmaster:  The following is from an email sent to Club member Tom Dalton from his friend Ian Foulke about his first experience surfing at Teahupoo.  I want to thank Ian for his accounting of that day, The story shows the respect that must be  given to a spot where surfing can be a life or death experience!  He is a much braver man than I.  Jim

"
First wave in the set of 5-6 waves, so you can use your imagination to figure out what was stacked up behind these guys. There are two angles, one from a boogie board and one from the water. Either way, I got slaughtered. And yes, I'm the little dot trying to get through the wave."  Ian Foulke
(Not sure which angle this one is, DLSA Webmaster)

Email Subject: 30 Minutes With Teahupoo

Surviving the worst flogging of your life…30 minutes into your first session.

The Duck Dive: Possibly the most elementary and rudimentary lessons in
surfing. The duck dive’s purpose is to penetrate board and surfer
beneath the wave with minimal resistance. Today, I failed Duck Dive
101.

I was last in line and coming over a solid 6 footer. I had no idea
what to expect, much less the set of the morning. In fact, the boys in
front of me didn’t even have a chance to react to give me fair warning
but they had a solid 5-7 strokes on me. As soon as I came over the
little hump I knew I was done…Taking as many big strokes as I could I
felt like I was making good ground. My generated speed was only a
result of the draining water that would, ironically, detonate me on to
the reef.  I planned my duck dive, with false confidence, and my last
thought was, “Don’t let your breath out till you surface.”

Its hard to put a size in feet to this wave. But I know that I’ve
never felt so small. I pushed my board deep as possible and opened my
eyes so I could at least watch my demise. The feeling was similar to
what I think it would be like duck diving through a wall of jello. As
quickly as I thought I had made it and began exhaling my air, I was
getting sling shot back into the abyss of doom.

It was like a roller coaster. The time lost getting to the top (duck
dive) is quickly made up with a vicious rag doll experience.  I
actually surfaced quickly and was thankful before I realized what was
about to break behind me.

The second wave was bigger than the first and gave me a horrible
lashing; pushing me further on to the reef. It was one of those waves
you NEVER want to see break in front of you. I hit bottom and felt the
coral cheese grade my legs and toes as it torched me.

Now, I find myself standing on razor sharp coral, in waist deep water,
staring at what couldn’t be less than a 15 foot ball of white water
coming at me. I lay flat and accept my fate.

My fate was worse that I could have imagined. Half way through my
lashing I feel my leash catch on a coral head. I am now lassoed to the
reef and under water. The current is so strong I can’t fight back and
I can’t find the bottom. I am losing my mental edge. Just as the
current begins to let up I decide to reach for my leash and as I
fumble with it I feel the worst-case scenario about to eat me for
lunch. A second wave.

The wall of water hit me again and denied me all opportunity to
continue playing with my leash. At this point I can only hope that my
leash will break. I start seeing stars. I fight with everything I have
and grab the yellow loop that will release the pin. This single pin
owns my life. I get a finger around it and it released. Freedom.

Some how, my body and board popped up in the foam next to each other.
The only blessing of the morning. Disoriented, I just lay on my board
and let a 6 foot wall wash me up on to dry reef. Fins blow out, coral
tears through the bottom, and I couldn’t care less. I just survived a
two-wave hold down and kept it together enough to get air again.

I am now stranded on dry reef. I need to walk across it and do the
loop around the lagoon and back out to the break if I want to make it
to the boat to exchange boards.

My first step….and its right on to a mean black sea urchin. Still
catching my breath I lift my foot up in pain and look at an unfamiliar
sight. To compliment the bleeding appendages, I now have no less that
200 black needles in my left foot that ensure a painful paddle in. I
don’t even bother swearing and decide heading to camp is the only
option. Paddling back to the camp is a good mile. My foot is on fire,
my body is bleeding, but I paddle with the knowledge that my last
breath will not be in Tahiti.

Forgive my grammar and spelling. I’ve just had 4+ beers at 10 am. Our
camp owner informed me that human urine is the best way to break down
the needles in my foot. Beer is a diuretic and I wanted to get this
going fast. Plus it is like 100 bee stings the beer helps with the
pain a little too, I guess. So, here I am typing on a state of the art
Apple laptop with my foot in a bucket of my own piss.

I am not sure what this means for the rest of my trip. I could be
coming home early or spending the next couple days on the boat. Either
way, I won’t be in surfing condition. Tahiti’s beauty has been matched
by its raw open ocean power and sandwiched me into indecision.

I’m going to take a nap.

Teapuhoo 1, Ian 0.

Alive,
Ian

Dewey Weber inducted to the the
Huntington Beach
Surfing Walk Of Fame
Dewey Weber, Founder of Dewey Weber Surfboards (one of the D.L.S.A.'s oldest sponsors) was inducted on August 5th,2010.
Article and Photos: Jim Coshland

This years Official Poster                                            Dewey's Plaque

Whether it was a coincidence or just fate, it definitely was fitting that Surfing Pioneer Dewey Weber was inducted into the Surfing Walk Of Fame in 2010, the 50th Anniversary of Dewey Weber Surfboards.  The induction Ceremony was well attended by by the public as well as legendary surfers, influential people in the surfing industry and current day surfing icons.  Celebrity sightings included Peter (P.T.) Townend who did the M.C. and induction duties, Walter Hoffman, Herbie Fletcher, David Nuuhiwa, Rabbit Bartholomew, " Bob "The Greek" Bolen,  and Kelly Slater to name a few.

Invocation

This years Walk Of Fame honorees besides Dewey were: Ian Cairns, Rick “Rockin Fig” Fignetti, Sunny Garcia, Dave Rochlen, Candy Calhoun and Honor Roll recognition for the late Dick Baker.

2010 Plaques

The 2010 Surfing Walk of Fame plaques joined over 100 other plaques from previous years inductee's which line Main Street in front of Jack's Surfshop at the corner of PCH just across from the Huntington Beach Pier.

P.T. introducing Shea Weber

The ceremony started at 10 a.m. and each recepient  either personally spoke or were talked about by a friend or relative. The various bio's, stories and lists of contributions that each person made to the sport of surfing was very interesting and awe inspiring.   All of them in their own way bettering, evolving and directing the sport, industry and surfing lifestyle to where it is today.

Shea Weber talking about his father

Dewey's son and current President/Owner of Dewey Weber Surfboards, Shea did a great job describing his Dad's contributions to the business of manufacturing surfboards as well as being one of, if not the original surfing hotdogger(s).   "The Little Man On Wheels" was as his nickname implies, was one of the first surfers to surf with a more high performance style than other surfers of the day.  His different surfing style was quickly emulated by other hotdogger's back then and lended itself and over time eventually evolved into the charging, high performance surfing style of many of today's longboarder's as well as shortboarder's too.  The shortboard revolution in the 70's prompted Dewey to develop his own line of shortboard designs, with shapes that to this day still rival the performance of current day modern thruster's.  Dewey's surfing, surfboard production innovations and marketing skills all played a huge roll and was a major influence to what the industry has become today.

Una Baker

The other inductee's bio's were also very impressive.   Dick Baker's wife Una who many of us know, was there to talk about her late husband and his contributions to the surfing industry.  It was good to see our local friend and remember Dick as well.  Sunny Garcia had many fans in the crowd and H.B. local hero "Rockin' Fig" got a big response from all his  friends there supporting him.  And Ian Cairns with his fellow "Bronzed Aussie" buddies, P.T. and Rabbit reminded everybody of that time in surfing when those guys dominated the international pro surfing scene.  The days other recipients were remembered very fondly for their accomplishments as well.

"Someone told me that the guy on the right rips"  Shea Weber and Kelly Slater.

So overall it was a very nice ceremony for well deserved recipients. Congratulations to the Weber Family, Dewey Weber Surfboards and all the other 2010 Walk Of fame Recipients!

Shea, Stacy and Corey Weber

Wounded Warrior Project
Manager Of Events regarding our recent
W.W. Surf Day

Good Evening All,

I want to send my heartfelt gratitude over for the awesome wounded warrior surf event thrown by DLSA, surf shops/vendors, volunteers, families and the community surrounding San Onofre.

Having just returned from Afghanistan and just moving to the West Coast, attending this event was a breath of fresh air and only reinforced my reasoning for relocating.  It was amazing to see our wounded service members and their families enjoying the ocean in a way that only surfing can provide.  Smiles, I believe were the theme of the day and they were only made possible by your surf club and the volunteers/community that support it.

It was a pleasure and an honor to meet you all.  I appreciate all of your time and hard work to make today such a success.  Enjoy the rest of your summer and I hope to see you all very soon.

Wounded Warrior Day

What a great day!!!!! Everyone seemed like they had a good time. All of the veterans looked like they had a lot of fun out in the water, and mingling with all of the volunteers on the beach. We had a great crew of volunteers helping put a really memorable day together for the veterans, and I think next years event will even be bigger and better. The first ever Mickey Munoz Paddle Surf Fiesta held on March 13, 2010 at Baby Beach, Dana Point Harbor was very well attended and a lot of fun for all!

As part of the Dana Point Festival of Whales, The Mickey Muñoz Paddle Surf Fiesta began with a Fun Paddle around Dana Point Harbor Island led by our own Mickey Munoz.  The Fun Paddle was launched after a vital “Rules of the Road” paddling safety meeting which was conducted by officials from Dana Point Harbor and the Orange County Sherriff Department’s Harbor Patrol.   One of the reasons that the event was held is because of the increasing popularity of Stand Up Paddleboarding and the regulations enforced

“With the explosion of stand-up paddle boarding there are a lot more people paddling in the harbor.  Safety and etiquette have become much more critical. Since Dana Point has become a Mecca for paddle sports, we wanted to have an event that’s message is about the importance of water safety and paddling etiquette” said surf legend Mickey Munoz.

“The County of Orange has always been on the cutting edge of boater safety and education and given the fact that Dana Point Harbor is a natural location for beginners on any type of human powered vessel it was obvious to us that we would introduce a common sense and easy to understand public program to ensure all the water enthusiast have the basic information to improve their safety while enjoying our Harbor and the local off shore waters." from Brad Gross, Director of Dana Point Harbor.

There was a paddleboarding trade show attended by some of the leading manufacturers of the industry.  There was also good food, education and participation by hundreds of people whio love this fun family pastime!

Proceeds of the event directly benefitted the Doheny State Beach Interpretive Association (DSBIA), one of the many organizations that the D.L.S.A.  endorses and supports.
